I thought sukiyaki was very popular in the U.S....I mean, there is even a Japanese song that became famous as "sukiyaki song". But I can't find any sukiyaki restaurant here in NY...it's only on a menu at some Japanese restaurant, but not a speciality store that specifically makes sukiyaki. I see some shabu shabu restaurant, though. My son fell in love with sukiyaki when my parents spoiled him with sukiyaki using a very special beef called "Hida beef"(similar to Kobe beef) this past summer in Japan. It's basically a hot pot made with iron skillet which grills the beef first. Then you add a special sauce made with sake, sugar and soy sauce. Then throw in some vegetables and you have Sukiyaki. It used to be a very luxurious dish for many Japanese since beef used to cost fortune. Now, everyone can enjoy this comfort hot pot without breaking the wallet...and once a luxury, it always seems a luxury...sweet!
I got this sliced beef at a Korean store near by. It's definitely too thick for making sukiyaki and doesn't even come close to "Hida beef", but hey, what ever works....or I'll make it work...will power!
In Japan, people usually crack a raw egg in a bowl and dip the ingredients in the pot as they eat. Raw egg sounds shocking to people here....I know. Unless you're a snake or Rocky, who eats raw egg? Well, it happens to be a staple food in Japan, especially for breakfast. It's like, there's nothing like a hot steaming rice covered with raw egg......Aaaaah, the amusement of learning different way of living and culture! It's so deep, man.
Sukiyaki bento box...the best part of "a day after"
